From Camp to Community: The SophistaPirates Become a Nonprofit

The Birth of the SophistaPirates

In 2014, a small group arrived at Element 11 with a simple idea: what if pirates didn’t steal, cheat, or plunder?

What if they led, educated, and inspired instead? That was the birth of the SophistaPirates — a camp built around the idea of being sophisticated pirates, creating space for art, music, and connection rather than conquest.

What started as a small gathering quickly became something more.

The Early Years: Building a Home in the Desert

In the beginning, the camp was simple: a few carports, some couches, and a small stage. But what we were really building was a place for people to gather — somewhere that felt like home in the middle of the desert. Year after year we added a little more: more shade, more seating, more music, more art, more community.

By 2017, SophistaPirates had grown into an official Element 11 theme camp. Around that same time, parts of the camp also made the voyage to Burning Man in 2016, 2017, and 2019. Each year, the vision grew.

Evolving the Camp: Art, Structures, and Spaces

As the community expanded, so did the scale of what we built. In 2021 we completed one of our biggest builds yet: the HSM SophistaPirates, the ship structure that once marked the entrance to camp and now serves as our stage.

In 2022 and 2023, the camp underwent another transformation. The original carports were replaced with large pallet rack structures, creating taller, stronger shade structures that better supported the growing camp. Then, in 2024, we introduced the visual centerpiece of SophistaPirates: Le Port Cochere. This LED-filled installation acts as a neon nexus within the camp — a glowing space where people gather, dance, and connect under shifting light.

Every year the camp grew not just in size, but in purpose.

Becoming a Nonprofit

After Element 11 last year, we began the journey to take SophistaPirates a step further. In February of this year, SophistaPirate Foundation officially became a nonprofit organization.

SophistaPirate Foundation is a nonprofit dedicated to advancing public access to arts, culture, and creative education.

Through immersive artistic spaces, large-scale art projects, and creative grants, we aim to empower individuals to engage in radical self-expression and community building.

Our programs bring transformative art experiences to underserved and rural communities, inspiring exploration, connection, and cultural enrichment for the public.

Why This Matters

Becoming a nonprofit allows SophistaPirates to expand beyond the playa. It opens the door to new collaborations, community partnerships, and donor support that help us build larger art installations, fund creative projects, and host events and educational experiences in Salt Lake City and beyond. What began as a small desert camp is evolving into something larger: a platform for community-driven art and culture.

The Voyage Continues

What started in 2014 as a few couches under a carport has grown into something far bigger than we imagined. It’s a community. It’s a creative platform. And now, it’s a nonprofit dedicated to sharing art, culture, and connection with the public.

The voyage continues.
